The Hennes Paintings.

This page contains images of original paintings rescued from 49 Gidley Way ("Cuckfield") by Cath Riley before the house was demolished in 2019. These paintings were done in the late 1940s-1950s by Hubert Hennes and his wife Hilary.

The paintings were photographed and enhanced by Chris Pym except for the images supplied by Brian Lowe.

Biographical Details

It has been difficult finding information about the Hennes. The following information has been found at various places on the internet. If anyone has further information, or corrections to the information below, please let me know.

Hubert Herman Hennes 1907-1986

Painter, born in London, who attended St. Martin's School of Art 1928-30, the RCA, 1930-34 and later taught at Leicester College of Art, 1934-1941.

Married Hilary Margaret Miller in 1946.

Taught at the Oxford School of Art.

Hilary Margaret Miller 1919-1993

Born in Camberwell, south London where her father was the curator of the South London Art Gallery. Attended Blackheath High School and, from 1936 to 1940, studied at the Blackheath School of Art, and then for a further three years at the Royal College of Art. After graduating, she taught at the South East Sussex Technical College and in 1946 married the artist Hubert Hennes.

The couple lived in Oxford, where they both held teaching posts at the Oxford School of Art.

Between 1948 and 1967 Miller frequently exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy in London, and also illustrated a number of books on gardening and natural history, such as 'The Living World' and 'Boff's Book of Gardening'.
